twenty (and one) questions on filmic experiences

Monday, August 3, 2009 |

I’ve been enjoying other people’s meme responses lately, and thought I’d get in on a little of the action. I lifted this from Wagging the Fox, and he got it from KV Taylor (it might have gone through one or more people to reach me, but we won’t worry about that…). If you’ve answered these questions before or will do so, please link in the comments. I love reading about other people. And their quirks. But movies especially – I’m a film addict.

1. Name a movie that you've seen more than ten times.

This is embarrassing. The only non-animated movie I can remember seeing more than 10 times (that I’m absitively posolutely sure about) is the Disney version of The Swiss Family Robinson. This only means that I haven’t lived long enough or re-watched my favorites enough. Because that is NOT one of my favorites…

2. Name a movie that you've seen multiple times in the theater.

Most recently? Star Trek. Saw it three times. I’m a big repeat-offender. Ha.

3. Name an actor/actress that would make you more inclined to see a movie.

Cate Blanchett. She’s always absolutely incredible.

4. Name an actor/actress that would make you less inclined to see a movie.

Brendan Fraser comes to mind, but I’m sure there are others (Paris Hilton? Eddie Murphy? Yeah…).

5. Name a movie that you can and do quote from.

Is it a bad sign that the first thing that pops into my head is Finding Nemo? “’ello. My name’s Bruce, and I’m a shark.” “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…”

6. Name a movie musical that you know all the lyrics to all the songs.

My Fair Lady. I was going to say South Pacific right away, but realized that I don’t know ALL the lyrics. And I could have answered with The Music Man, but that would have made my mother too proud (her favorite movie, EVER. Come to think of it, I’m sure I’ve seen that one more than 10 times…).

7. Name a movie that you've been known to sing along with.

The animated Disney classic The Jungle Book. My whole family will sing along to it, actually. In front of strangers, too, when the mood strikes.

8. Name a movie that you would recommend everyone see.

Charlotte Gray, starring Cate Blanchett, Billy Crudup and Michael Gambon. Visually stunning and amazing acting. Favorite movie ever.

9. Name a movie that you own.

Stardust.

10. Name an actor/actress that launched his/her entertainment career in another medium but who has surprised you with his/her acting chops.

Charlize Theron. She started as a model and a ballerina, I believe, but then switched to movies. I’ve seen her modeling photos – they’re gorgeous – but she’s also amazing in film.

11. Have you ever seen a movie in a drive-in? If so, what?

No, I’ve never been to a drive-in. It’s strange, because there have always been drive-in theaters within 20 minutes of wherever I’ve lived…but I suppose I just like regular theaters better.

12. Name a movie that you keep meaning to see but just haven’t yet gotten around to it.

300, with Gerard Butler. I heard good things (well, enthusiastic things) about it when it came out, but (surprisingly?) none of my girlfriends wanted to go see it. Not that I need them to movie-watch with me, but yeah. Never got around to it. Adding it to my Netflix queue now.

13. Ever walked out of a movie?

Once. I’m not a walk out of movies type of girl, but I can’t stand scary films. I’m a huge wuss. So when I got talked in to seeing Will Smith’s I Am Legend, I freaked about halfway through, and went and sat in my sister’s car.

14. Name a movie that made you cry in the theater.

Rachael Getting Married. I wept through it. Very painful (and wonderfully-made).

15. What’s the last movie you saw in the theater?

Funny People, this last weekend. Breakdown: Seth Rogen is hilarious, Adam Sandler is losing his mojo, and Judd Apatow should have cut his wife’s screen time by at least half, if not more. Wait, usually I’m not this critical…

16. What’s your favorite/preferred genre of movie?

I was thinking I’d say either children’s movies (term used loosely) or romantic comedies, but when it comes down to it (and when I looked at my must-see movie list for this summer), I really love action films. Big-budget, lots of exciting chases and twists and weird things action movies. Strange, to find this out about myself now…

But it does explain why I’m going to go see G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, despite being neither a male nor a teenager.

17. What’s the first movie you remember seeing in the theater?

Aladdin. My parents didn’t take us to movies as kids, but one time when we visited relatives, they treated us to a night out at the theater. It was magical.

18. What movie do you wish you had never seen?

Sideways. That film was like trash for the brain.

19. What is the weirdest movie you enjoyed?

Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits was fairly weird. I would have put Donnie Darko, but the question did say ‘enjoyed,’ and I’m not sure I can truly say that watching DD two times back-to-back over my first college Thanksgiving vacation was a healthy or happy experience.

20. What is the scariest movie you’ve seen?

The Grudge 2. Although ‘seen’ is a relative term. I had my eyes and ears covered for more than half of it.

21. What is the funniest movie you’ve seen?

It’s so hard to make a judgment like this…I don’t have a list of all the films I’ve seen over the years, and I certainly don’t remember how hard I laughed at each one. It muddles things a bit that I laugh at almost every movie I see, too. But most recently I thoroughly enjoyed The Brothers Bloom.

Charlotte Gray = amazing.

I saw it a while ago, but I would bet a shiny penny that I cried like a baby at some point during the viewing.

I absolutely love My Fair Lady! I'm completely sure that I've seen that one more than ten times. I have the DVD, and I absolutely adore it. It kind of made me sad when I found out that Audrey Hepburn didn't sing her own songs, though. My favorite song in that movie is the Ascott Opening Race. So prim and proper.

I really need to rewatch The Music Man. I remember watching it when I was 11 or so and absolutely loving it. Dick Van Dyke is one of my favorite old-time actors! I loved his TV show. The female romantic interest, whose name completely escapes me at the moment, was fun to watch in Oklahoma! which is another one of my favorites. :)
