in honor of the snowpocalypse – a giveaway

Friday, February 5, 2010 |

It’s snowing right now as I type. Snowing as in, ‘we predict 18-24 inches in a 36-hour period.’ Some people are calling it the snowpocalypse, which I kind of like, because it sounds vaguely end-of-the-worldy, but mostly just silly and funny. And I’ve been kicking around the idea of a new giveaway.

BEHOLD, the giveaway has arrived. Last November I went to a Cherie Priest book-signing in Seattle (I took my Dad with me. He’s a trooper). I got two copies of Boneshaker signed – one for myself, and one for my blog. That book has been faithfully sitting on the shelf ever since, and it needs a new owner.

In the early days of the Civil War, rumors of gold in the frozen Klondike brought hordes of newcomers to the Pacific Northwest. Anxious to compete, Russian prospectors commissioned inventor Leviticus Blue to create a great machine that could mine through Alaska’s ice. Thus Dr. Blue’s Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine was born.

But on its first test run the Boneshaker went terribly awry, destroying several blocks of downtown Seattle and unearthing a subterranean vein of blight gas that turned anyone who breathed it into the living dead.

Now it is sixteen years later, and a wall has been built to enclose the devastated and toxic city. Just beyond it lives Blue’s widow, Briar Wilkes. Life is hard with a ruined reputation and a teenaged boy to support, but she and Ezekiel are managing. That is, until Ezekiel undertakes a secret crusade to rewrite history.

His quest will take him under the wall and into a city teeming with ravenous undead, air pirates, criminal overlords, and heavily armed refugees. And only Briar can bring him out alive.

If you’d like to win your own copy of Boneshaker, this is your chance! I’ll give away one (1) SIGNED book to a lucky entrant.

Leave a comment on this post answering the question, “What event will trigger the apocalypse?” (i.e. flood, zombies, snow, asteroid, etc.)

Please include your email address or another method of contact. Giveaway is open internationally. Comments will close on February 19 at 11:59pm EST, and I will notify the randomly selected winner via email.

Good luck!

Right now it feels like snow because there is so much. I've kind of always imagined fire, but ???
Thanks for the fabulous giveaway.

oh, i just love the COVER of that book - it's beautiful!

we're supposed to get a whole whack of it tonight, into tomorrow. people are nuts, and the grocery stores are SWARMING! but we only get snow that lasts a couple of days. :) silly.

i think that Kraft US buying out Cadbury UK is going to trigger the apocalypse, honestly. i'm skeered!

Stacy said...

I think it will be flooding of some sort...whether from rain or tsunami or hurricane etc. But from zombies is more fun ha ha.

ninefly said...

I'm thinking too much garbage seeping into the water supply and poisoning us all...or atomic warfare...definitely something caused by humans lol

thanks so much for giving away this specially signed copy!

Elie said...

I have to go with flood too. I live in a region that is frequently attacked by hurricanes and the amount of damage it does is unbelievable. Water wipes out everything.

Thanks for the chance to read this, I have never read a steampunk before.

I'm going with asteroid because I've seen too many Jerry Bruckheimer movies!

B. Cool contest! What a cool concept!
C. Please consider me.
E. Being a Florida girl my vote is going to be hurricanes and tornadoes attacking all shorelines.

Another great contest. Good on ya, Celia. To answer the question:

Bees. Yup, bectcha didn't see that one coming. Not killer bees, though that would be pretty neat. I'm talking about the honey bee crisis. Fewer bees, means less pollination, which means less food, which means price hikes, then food riots, bringing out food wars, then THE APOCALYPSE.

Yup ... Bees.

i'd have to say models... you know, their skinniness is bound to catch, and then people will walk around with bony, sharp elbows and when they fall down they'll accidentally impale others and it'll be a huge mess.

It's all going to start when a small child sneezes on a grapefruit in the Fred Meyer produce. The said grapefruit is then purchased by a young couple embarking on there first picnic. Upon leaving the store, the young lady takes compassion on a lonely homeless man by giving him her sneezed on grapefruit. That homeless man then proceeds to hobble behind a dumpster to partake of a meal of grapefruit. With the first bite he knows that this will be a great meal. Sadly, the earth sends forth a Verneshot (for info on this event:, destroying the world.

It's totally going to be nuclear. Without nuclear fallout, we will never get the quality zombies and monsters that one needs for a successful apocalypse.

I'm hoping you have to send that book right back to Seattle!

This sounds like a great read, please count me in! I love the synopsis, so intriguing~

Hmmm... Can extreme weather count? This winter was absolutely (and still is) the coldest ever. I live in what is supposed to be warm weather year-round and it was freezing. D: Extreme weather can bring on floods and snow too?

The Sun will start to die (like every star eventually does) causing gravitational shifts throughout the galaxy sending plantes of their axis and causing the moon to crash into the Earth.

It's snowing here too, though more of a 6-8 inches in 36 hours than an 18...Anyway, I'm a firm believer in the zombie WILL happen ;D. Thanks for the contest! The book sounds really good!

LiLi said...

I think it would most likely be the supernatural apocalypse. When all the creatures and critters we knew were out there along finally make themselves known personally. A coming out of the closet moment that leads straight to the world's demise, what a nice ending lol.

Tia said...

Haha, I'm at home waiting the "snowpocalypse" as well. Everything in town has been canceled for the whole weekend, but no snow yet. We'll see if we actually get the one to two feet.

I always thought of the world ending in a rather "mundane" way... running out of natural resources and, unable to adjust, slowly succumbing to the elements. But, judging from the reaction to the oncoming snow here, the world will probably end due to panic and overreaction to something simple!

Something brought about by man, such as a nuclear explosion.

She said...

Oh yes, the snowpocalypse. I'm right there with you, and hoping my power doesn't shut off. Anywho, please enter me into your contest!

While I understand the feasibility of a polar shift or a massive flood, I am going to say that it will be of a more paranormal nature. Some weird electrical field (probably set off by Desmond pressing some buttons) will raise all the old warlords from the dead, and the earth will be turned into one huge Risk board. Boundaries will be slashed, savage warfare (hello, Vlad Tepes) will ensue, and all those crazy techniques you read about in history books will come true. Nations will fall and people will perish. Only as the powers of Stalin and Attila the Hun are about to wipeout the straggling masses of each other's armies will the world finally implode upon itself, unable to sustain the torture of its inhabitants and lands. Atlas will then shrug and walk off into the cosmos, looking forward to starting it all over again. Maybe this time he'll just be condemned to be chained to a rock.

That's my prediction anyways. ecaramil at gmail dot com

Oh totally a disease will cause the apocalypse, seriously it'll be something the government developed, but it'll spread before there's a cure, much like in The Stand by Stephen King.

Katie said...

I'm giddy like a schoolgirl over the impending snowpocalypse.

I vote for comet impact.

Mandy said...

I'm think Florida's incredibly bi-polar weather, I mean record highs then record all time lows all in the space of 3 weeks? 80 degrees one week, then 40 the next, will cause the melting and re-freezing of the polar ice caps, causing half of the world to flood, then freeze over, then unfreeze again, which will cause all the things that go bump in the night that had been hibernating in the bottom of the sea to come out and attack.

Personally, I say watch out for the mice. They run everything, you know.

Is there really any need to debate? The only trigger for the apoccalypse is going to be ZOMBIES!!!! *I am already preparing as we speak; stored up supplies, and practicing my decapatizing skills* :D

Pip Hunn said...

What triggers the apocalypse?

Think about it.
Most disasters are localized. Tsunamis. Blizzards. Zombie outbreaks.

What with increasingly fast and effective international aid and, in the case of zombification, military response times, disasters can be responded to quickly and with a minimal loss of life.

What disasters CAN and WILL do is displace people. You think zombies are scary? try imagining what'll happen when Bangladesh eventually floods. Or India becomes uninhabitable for some reason. Or China gets overrun with flesh-eating viruses.

Millions and MILLIONS of people will flee. How do you stop twenty million people trying to cross borders into your country? How do you maintain order?

The end of the world as we know it will come about by the unpreparedness of the world to deal with large-scale movements of dispossessed, hungry, panicked humans.

You heard it here first :)

Hm...I am going to have to go with a zombie apocalypse. I think this will be triggered by energy drinks. So energy drink consumers should be aware of what they are drinking or they may end up as a zombie. (:

I think it will be a bit more simple than all this conjecture. "Wars and rumors of wars", in my opinion fighting each other will bring us extinction.
